finally the Collective DVD

At last Hudson Europe have finally recieved copys of the collective DVD and will be shipping mine today.
Have any of you guys on the other side of the atlantic been able to check it out yet?

Yes... I visited drummers collective while I was in New York City for the Chick Corea show and they had copies of the DVD there.

It's jammed with over 5 hours of footage... and the performances are great.

Definite highlights include Dave Weckl playing a extended version of his solo piece "cultural concurrance" and the Steve Smith/Victor Wooten duet is extremely sick!

Lee consider yourself lucky. Its usually a two month wait on previous releases from the states to the uk. (thats how long i've waited before) [img]frown.gif[/img]

This is good news for the brits, if they keep the release up at the same time as the US.

I've been watching small parts of the DVD all day at our shop. I haven't seen it all but Horacio, Weckl and Smith all pretty much do what you expect. Michael Lauren played some second line kind of stuff with a nice feel. Kim Plainfield played some pretty cool latin stuff though I haven't seen much of it. There's plenty of stuff for fusion geeks from the usual suspects but the most "interesting" performance was by Kenwood Dennard. I've always wanted to see him since I've heard the odd Maceo or Brand X tune with him on it and he sounded good. After seeing this DVD you may wonder if someone dosed him with acid before he got on stage. This could be the worst and is certainly the most bizaare performance I have ever seen by any drummer on a DVD or Video. I've heard about his Metarhythmic thing for years and finally got to see it. It really defies description. He plays synthesizer, drums and sings simultaneously. He does each of these things horribly. Call it schadenfreud but it's so bad I think I like it. It actually made a few of the people very uncomfortable watching it. Some of our employees are already doing impressions of him for laughs. Fortunately, it's only about ten minutes long. But what an excruciating ten minutes....

I don't have the dvd [def would like to get it eventually!], but i will comment on Kenwood...

That's really strange...i saw him do a drum clinic, & then also his "One Man Meta-Rhythmic Orchestra" thing back in the mid-to-late-80's; & in the clinic [drums only] itself he ROCKED... of course, i was much younger then & my "ear" for rhythmic understanding [as relates to the kit] was not as "developed" as it is now, naturally... but his drum performance on Sting's version of "Little Wing" is quite nice as well, to me...i also have a Darryl Dobson album [jazz-rock/fusion gtrst w a mid-east edge] & Kenwood is bitchin on it... i've also heard some bootleg stuff w Jaco that was pretty burnin for the then-time-frame... even Vinnie talked highly of Ken in his now infamous '84 clinics w Tim Landers [talked about certain things KD would do on the kit, & certain aspects of his technique, etc]... maybe Ken is just simply "lost in the 60's/70's" playing style mode these daze, or something?! I don't think he was on anything I was just making an observation. His performance is very, very bizaare and worse still sloppy, grooveless and boring. I'd heard him on several things of the things you mention, have read about him and his concepts, etc. and was profoundly let down. On the plus side I saw some of the Gadd stuff today on the DVD and it was nice. There's some backstage rehearsal stuff with Steve Smith and V. Wooten that was interesting too.
